Pondering Tidbits of Truth
is my simple and inadequate way of providing nuggets of spiritual wisdom for
you to chew on from time to time.
Pope Benedict Emeritus XVI
“We will know God to the extent that we are set free from
ourselves.”
(From Dogma and Preaching: Applying Christian Doctrine to Daily Life)
The Virtue of Diligence
“During
recitation of the Divine Office do as St. Augustine did: banish every other
thought and give up your whole soul for it…Recite the Office in a retired
place, kneeling if possible, and at regular hours; do so with great calmness,
with much reverence and slowly. Stop from time to time to dwell upon those
pious sentiments which the Lord communicated to him…In order to be attentive at
Office, Father Faber often imagined his guardian angel on one side, marking all
the words said well, and on the other side a demon recording all distractions
of mind…Imagine reciting the Office amid multitudes of angels, joining in their
choir.”
(From A Year With the Saints – A Virtue for Every
Month of the Year)
Blaise Pascal
“Our achievements of today are but the sum total of our
thoughts of yesterday. You are today where the thoughts of yesterday have
brought you and you will be tomorrow where the thoughts of today take you.”
(From Pensees)
