I have read, enjoyed, and
highly recommended the two prior books in this trilogy (Julia’s Gifts
and Charlotte’s Honor) and eagerly awaited the arrival of Ella’s
Promise. Some personal health issues delayed my writing this review. Let
not my tardiness dissuade you from getting a copy ASAP. This tale did not
disappoint.
Amidst the current chaos
in our world, it is somewhat reassuring to recall other times of international distress,
where death was a frequent visitor and where courageous men and women risked
their lives to advance the common good.
Historical romance books
are not my general cup of tea. I am, however, a sucker for well-researched,
well-developed and well-written fiction with unique story lines – something author
Ellen Gable excels in writing.
In Ella’s Promise,
we are introduced to Ella Neumann, an American born surgical nurse of Germanic
heritage who was assigned to treat injured German POWs in a field hospital in France
during World War I. It was in her nursing capacity that she first met, and medically
cared for, Garrett Smith, whom she believed was a German prisoner. She later discovers
that he is an undercover Canadian spy. Suddenly, their relationship changed. You
won’t want to put this fast-paced tale down. I couldn’t.
I have no hesitancy in
highly recommending this book. Although I am sadden that this trilogy has come
to an end, I only pray that Ellen Gable, most gifted storyteller that she is,
is already working on her next page-turning novel. I will be the first in line
to read it.
