Book Review - Ella's Promise - Another Page-Turning Tale from Ellen Gable

I have read, enjoyed, and highly recommended the two prior books in this trilogy (Julia’s Gifts and Charlotte’s Honor) and eagerly awaited the arrival of Ella’s Promise. Some personal health issues delayed my writing this review. Let not my tardiness dissuade you from getting a copy ASAP. This tale did not disappoint.

Amidst the current chaos in our world, it is somewhat reassuring to recall other times of international distress, where death was a frequent visitor and where courageous men and women risked their lives to advance the common good.

Historical romance books are not my general cup of tea. I am, however, a sucker for well-researched, well-developed and well-written fiction with unique story lines – something author Ellen Gable excels in writing.

In Ella’s Promise, we are introduced to Ella Neumann, an American born surgical nurse of Germanic heritage who was assigned to treat injured German POWs in a field hospital in France during World War I. It was in her nursing capacity that she first met, and medically cared for, Garrett Smith, whom she believed was a German prisoner. She later discovers that he is an undercover Canadian spy. Suddenly, their relationship changed. You won’t want to put this fast-paced tale down. I couldn’t.

I have no hesitancy in highly recommending this book. Although I am sadden that this trilogy has come to an end, I only pray that Ellen Gable, most gifted storyteller that she is, is already working on her next page-turning novel. I will be the first in line to read it.

PRAYER TO BE PRESERVED FROM SUDDEN DEATH

MOST AMIABLE JESUS "I humbly implore Thee by Thy ignominious Scourging, The Crowning with Thorns, Thy Holy Cross, and by all Thy Goodness, not to permit me to pass out of this world without having received Thy most holy Sacraments." -Prayer of St. Vincent Ferrer

PRAYER OF ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA

"Eternal Father, all things are possible for You. Although You created us without our assistance, You will not save us unless we help. Therefore, I pray You re-create their wills so that they wish for what they do not wish for: I ask this of Your infinite mercy. You have created us out of nothing. Now that we exist have mercy on us. Re-make the vessel which You created in Your own image and likeness. Bring them back to Your grace through the grace and blood of You Son, the beloved Jesus Christ."
