St. Louis Bertrand, O.P. (1526-1581) His early years – On January 1, 1526, one hundred and seven years after the death of St. Vincent Ferrer, another Dominican saint was born in Valencia – St. Louis Bertrand. He was actually baptized in the same Church and font in which St. Vincent had been baptized. Louis’s father, John, was related to and had an ardent devotion to Saint Vincent . He passed that devotion to his son – one which Louis treasured throughout his life. Louis has been described as “a fretful child and nothing seemed to comfort him except the sight of the holy images in the churches”. And when He exposes Himself upon the altar, He is hurt to the Heart by the irreverence of so many who either have no faith at all or a faith that is very weak. When He goes through the streets in order to bring unspeakable blessings to His beloved children, He hears curses and blasphemies that make out of His errand of mercy another way of the cross. But in the midst of all these bitternesses, one hope sustains Him – the hope of a place of refuge that will offer the love and peace He craves. Do you really think that in the never-ending battle to save souls discussing the existence and nature of hell is inappropriate, counterproductive or unnecessary? (Image Source: Catholic Pure and Simple ) Maybe St. Teresa of Avila may cause you to change your mind: At another time something else happened to me [Teresa of Avila] that frightened me very much. I was at a place where a certain person died who for many years had lived a wicked life, from what I knew. But he had been sick for two years, and in some things it seems he had made amends. He died without confession, but nevertheless it didn't seem to me he would be condemned.
